Why Fiberglass Sculptures Bring Delight For Children?

The urban landscape around us has become choc-a-bloc with concrete structures. There is hardly any trace of greenery that soothes the eyes or brings relief to the weary soul. The apparent grey landscape replete with concrete jungle is specially stifling for children. Since the wandering and curious minds of children do not get to see nature in its truest form, they often miss the joys of childhood. If nature cannot be recreated in the concrete jungle how about mirroring its aspects through sculptures. One could have well designed sculptures of trees, birds or animals planted in the open spaces. These would not only be a welcome relief for city dwellers especially children but would be a welcoming sight for the tourists as well.

Making of sculptures is an elaborate exercise that costs time and money. And in the sleep deprived working hours of today’s workforce, coming up with beautiful sculptures made of stone can be a challenge indeed. So, is there a way out? The answer comes in the form of using fiberglass as a material. The flexibility of fiberglass makes it an ideal material for artists to give shape to their vivid imagination. Thus, you can have fiberglass animal sculptures dotting your neighbourhood or open spaces. These can bring delight to the children (and adults) as they would be able to see, touch and feel the sculptures.

What makes fiberglass flexible?

The material made out of molten glass is woven into a resin like substance. Its supposed molten state can be easily driven into a cast of any shape and size. By using the material artists can bring to life any shape that one can think of. The same, however, if tried on stone, can not only be time consuming but depending on the skill of the artist, may or may not match the real figure. Thus, fiberglass can be used to make cartoons or fictional characters, modern art, animals, mythological characters of gods and goddesses etc. The sculptures can act as a learning exercise for children when installed in places like schools or museums.

Other characteristics of fiberglass
  • Lightweight: The sculptures made of fiberglass are lightweight and can be easily carried and transported. It has been observed that transporting stone or clay sculptures or statues can be costly since they are quite heavy. Also, the ones made of clay can be damaged during transportation as well. Fiberglass, on the other hand, can withstand the rigours of travel like temperature, pressure, rough handling or vibrations.
  • Durable: Fiberglass is an extremely durable substance as it can withstand the vagaries of nature like heat, cold or precipitation. Sculptures made of stone, plastic or clay can undergo expansion and contraction during summers or winters. Such physical phenomena can result in the sculptures developing cracks. Whereas fiberglass has the innate strength to withstand any contraction or expansion even when kept in the open.
  • Colourful: Be it the fiberglass animal sculptures or any other statue, the objects can be given colours that remain permanent. The same cannot be said about other type of statues, for the colours can fade with time or when exposed to moisture.
Conclusion
The use of fiberglass as a material to build sculptures or statues (of animals, cartoons, gods or goddesses) has many advantages. These should be used to ensure durability and cost savings or to bring about variety.
